- Chapter 2 - Installation
-
-
- !SimNet requires an Archimedes with 2MB or more memory. It can
- run on either a client station or the server machine itself. It is
- recommended that it is run on the server, particularly if large
- password files are involved. Optimisations are used to increase
- performance if the password file is recognised to be present on
- local hard disk.
-
- !SimNet maintains the password file structure employed by the
- Acorn Level 4 File Server. It also uses the File Server Manager
- protocol to read and write password information when run on a
- client station. !SimNet will only run with RISCOS3.1 or later
- versions.
-
- !SimNet is unprotected on the distribution master disk. Make a
- copy of this disk for security reasons now. Note that the copyright
- on the software disallows you from duplicating the disk for any
- other reason. The Master disk will contain two files:
-
- !SimNet − the application
- README − update notes
-
- The file README is a text file which describes any enhancements
- or differences in the latest version of the program compared to the
- information in this manual. Read this first by double clicking on the
- file in a directory viewer. An Edit window will appear allowing the
- file contents to be browsed through.
-
- !SimNet is the application itself and you would normally install it in
- a convenient location on a server hard disk. To install, choose the
- target directory and then simply ‘drag’ the application from the
- Master floppy disk to the target.
-
- To start !SimNet double click on its icon in the target directory
- viewer. The application will load into memory and its icon will
- appear on the icon bar, as shown in the picture opposite. Click
- with SELECT on the icon to make the Control Panel (CP) appear.
